You teach your child how to safely cross a street.
Is there any doubt in your mind the child could be crippled or killed crossing a street wrong?
It is easier to teach firearms safety to a child. The child will be far more attentive.
You never have to repeat anything. They learn the first time every time.
Are guns Dangerous? Ignorance of firearms is dangerous.
The most dangerous thing in any home is a gas stove.
It is capable of asphyxiating everyone in a home or even turning a home into a giant fuel/air bomb that can demolish neighboring homes.
That rarely ever happens because the mother who pulls a foot stool over for her little girl to stand on while she teaches her how to bake brownies also teaches her how to safely use a gas stove.
Not so long ago, firearms were common in most homes.
Winchester & Stevens manufactured small rifles expressly for use by children.
Those "Boys Training Rifles" were more common than footballs & bicycles.
Schools had Rifle Teams. Bad incidents were so rare I can't recall even one.
Today a child can't even go to school with a picture of a gun on his T shirt.
Why does Government discourage private firearms ownership?
What is the reason for the 2nd Amendment to our Constitution?
It is very difficult to enslave men while you are looking down the barrels of their rifles!
Take an NRA Firearms Safety Course PRIOR to purchasing firearms.
Take the wife with you and when you come home teach even your small children, girls too.
Intended use & terrain will dictate your choice of firearm.
If you intend to put many hours into perfecting your skills you will also want to spend hours learning what is best for you to purchase and that is beyond the scope of this article.
The best place for a novice to learn about firearms is the Target Range.
Introduce yourself as a novice seeking knowledge and you will find many eager to help.
If the gun is to be used strictly for home defense and you are not planning on becoming an Olympic Pistol Champion then the best choice is a heavy, large bore revolver loaded with shot shells. A heavy pistol will recoil less. A longer barrel will have less muzzle blast. Unlike a solid bullet, shot will not go ripping out through your wall and in through your neighbor's wall. At close range a shot shell is more lethal than a hollow point bullet.
Your family can quickly become proficient by smashing a few beverage cans.
Your wife will not have to kill anyone. She can easily perform an instant sex change operation or turn an intruder's foot into hamburger. This makes an awful mess on the carpet but money can fix the carpet. Money can't fix the harm intruders would do to your wife and child.
Is it safe to keep guns in my home? Only if you learn to use them safely.
