What do the DREAM Act and the defense budget have in common? If Harry Reid, Democrat Leader of the Senate, has his way, they will both pass next week. How they will both pass is the latest dirty trick pulled out in this political season. Stymied on appeasing the Hispanic voters by being unable to pass an immigration overhaul, the 'comprehensive solution' much demanded by the Democrats in Washington, Reid has pulled another trick; one which he thinks will endear him and other Democrats in contested races while placing Republican contenders in a bad light. Reid has announced that he is making the DREAM Act part of the defense bill which the Senate will take up next week.
What is the DREAM Act and why is it worrisome? It sounds innocuous on its face; and, it certainly should be familiar to anyone who has listened to the news. Further, it has been highly touted by Obama and others pandering to the Hispanics for rights for illegals. It has been on Facebook and MySpace and has been Twittered and Mixxed and blogged about. Facebook has even been used to sign up DREAM Act activists with the widely spread post "DREAM ACT 2009: Obama supports the DREAM ACT. Do you?" And look at the YouTube presentations with smiling, happy, successful teens. It's up to you, it says, to make their futures bright and fulfilled.
Dream Act 2010 Promo.
For an administration and majority in Congress, their demands for comprehensive immigration reform have fallen flat. Now, desperate to hold on to the Hispanic voters, they have concocted a way to nibble around the edges and give citizenship to illegals in this country. Not unexpectedly, they are doing it on your tax dollar.
The DREAM Act, short for the Development, Relief, and Education of Illegal Minors Act, would allow college educations for illegals at in-state tuition rates and with federal financial aid. Without the DREAM Act, illegals would have to pay the same tuition that foreign students pay and would not be entitled to federal financial aid. What the crafty authors of this bill and its promoters don't tell you is that there is financial aid for foreign students. The other thing they don't press is the fact that these illegals have already been educated on our tax dollar through our public schools.
It does two other things, one being that it would then allow that student to get a job here. Secondly, in the event the student does not want to go to college and would like to join the military, they can be accepted into the military. A non-citizen can join the military now, although I have some serious reservations about that. However, that is another topic.
The promotion of the DREAM Act is lacking three important things: young children, the elderly and puppies, the things that help give that warm, fuzzy feeling about supporting it. Right now they think it is enough that we feel obliged to kids whose futures we hold in our hands to mold or destroy.
While the Defense Bill normally passes with a bi-partisan vote, Reid may have created a situation where the GOP, and some Democrats, get sweaty palms over voting for it. Harry doesn't seem to mind holding our military hostage. While it has received little press coverage, which is of little surprise, Harry has, also, included 'don't ask, don't tell' into this Defense Bill. Maybe Harry is taking the chance of hurting our men and women in service for his political gain and that of other Democrats. It seems so.
The Defense Bill will require sixty votes to pass.
