This election is the most crucial in modern American history. It is not primarily about jobs and economics, it is about national security and, to be blunt, national survival. America, and indeed the entire Western World, faces destruction if communist sympathizer Barack Obama is returned to office.

Trevor Loudon - Think Communism's Not that Bad? Think Again.

Mind Control. The New York Times has an article on the recently re-opened "National Museum of China," located in Tiananmen Square, the location of the bloody Tiananmen Square Massacre on June 4, 1989. Ironically, but not surprisingly, the museum contains not one mention of the incident. I have included a few excerpts from the article below. The discussion of the rampant revisionist history in this museum is painfully amusing - those same people who would wish socialism and communism upon the United States would hardly be delighted at the prospect of complete State control of mind and freedom...

At the elaborately renovated National Museum of China in Tiananmen Square, visitors interested in the recent history of the world’s fastest rising power can gaze at the cowboy hat that Deng Xiaoping once wore when he visited the United States, or admire the bullhorn that President Hu Jintao used to exhort people to overcome hardship after the Sichuan earthquake in 2008. But if their interests run to the Cultural Revolution that tore the country apart from 1966 to 1976 and resulted in millions of deaths, they will have to search a back corner of the two-million-square-foot museum, which will complete its opening this month, for a single photograph and three lines of text that are the only reference to that era...

In the 1990s, museum curators proposed a much franker look at the problems that led to the current era of reform. Initially, they designed a section called “10 years of tortuous development” on the 1950s and ’60s, including the Great Leap Forward’s devastating famine, according to Kirk Denton, a professor at Ohio State University who is writing a book on China’s museums. Curators proposed a similar section in the current exhibit, arguing that this era was decades in the past and the party was now strong enough to withstand criticism. That idea was rejected, however, after a lengthy debate, according to Ministry of Culture officials. In the end, the famine, widely regarded as the worst in recorded history, is only euphemistically mentioned by the phrase that “the project of constructing socialism suffered severe complications.” The Cultural Revolution was reduced to the photograph and brief caption.

“We wanted to celebrate China,” Mr. Tian said. “I think that’s understandable.”

Trevor Loudon - Some Views from the "Atlas Shrugged" Premiere

When I first encountered Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" as a teen back in the '70s, it was like being hit across the forehead with a cricket bat.

It was pretty hard going for a "bleeding heart" leftie Kiwi boy, brought up on free milk, family benefits and eternal gratitude for our "benevolent" welfare state.

Now "Atlas Shrugged", first released the year before I was born, is a feature film, with a Kiwi actor Grant Bowler, playing the leading role!

Millions have now read the book, second only in influence, in to the Bible. I never woulda dreamed this possible, back in the day.

"Atlas Shrugged" premiered on March 23 at the Heritage Foundation in Washington DC.

Trevor Loudon - "Multi-culturalism" - Do We Need Socialist, or Capitalist Solutions?

It is not immigration, even Islamic immigration that is the main problem. It is socialism.

The United States in the 19th century and early part of the 20th century was an open, free society, with minimal, if any government welfare. Immigrants came to the U.S., and while some did "ghettoise" for a generation or two, all eventually integrated into the U.S. mainstream.

The incentives were right. People came to the U.S. to escape the class stratification and statism of Europe to live free prosperous lives in a new world. The U.S. got the best of Europe and Asia, not the worst.

The two groups that had the most difficulty integrating, the Blacks and the American Indians, were the groups that suffered most from welfarism and statism - the Blacks on slave plantations, the Indians on government funded reservations.

If you want an open immigration immigration policy, you must also have an open economy and a free non socialist society.

While I agree with the sentiments in the above video, most commentators on "multiculturalism" seem to miss the main point.

Because France and all other European countries are socialist and socially stratified, they tend to attract immigrants who want a free ride. After a generation or two of being confined to ghettoes and living largely off the state tit, the children of these immigrants become a dispirited, bitter, resentful, crime ridden, disloyal 5th columnists - easily manipulated by radical Imans, labor leaders, "community organizers" and Marxist revolutionaries.

France and the rest of Europe must choose between the two futures below:

Turn France (Britain, Denmark, Sweden, Spain, Italy) into prosperous, low tax, free market, open constitutional societies, with no special favors for any social group. Rid the country of all state sponsored "multi-culturalism" and let individuals work out their own social arrangements as harmoniously as possible. Let freedom, capitalism and inter-marriage break down the social barriers.
Carry on down the statist road. Put new arrivals on welfare benefits and pander to their every cultural fetish, no matter how backward or barbaric. Throw money into their ghettos and encourage non-integration. This will eventually lead to mass poverty, and ever increasing social tensions, "solveable" only by mass re-patriations and/or civil war.

This blogger favors the first option, but is not stupid enough to think it is likely.

Trevor Loudon - Christchurch Earthquake Update

Post 'Quake Scenes From Central Christchurch

A month after the February 22 earthquake which devastated parts of Christchurch, the central city remains a "no-go zone."

Most Christchurch people who were outside the central city when the earthquake struck have only seen snippets of the damage on the TV news.

This is a just released official Civil Defence video of inner Christchurch. A huge percentage of the city is either flattened or will have to demolished. Nobody has any idea of the damage to the sewer systems yet.

While our "shake" was tiny compared to that which hit Japan, nature has definitely delivered a "king hit" to our beautiful town.

If you've ever been to Christchurch, here's your chance to play "spot the street".

Trevor Loudon - Christchurch Earthquake Update 3/9/2011

The big quake hit Christchurch 14 days ago. Seems like a life time.

The death toll so far is almost 200, but I know that at least 300 graves have been dug.

No survivors have been found since the day after the big shake. My friend and one time political colleague Jo Giles is still missing, presumed dead.

10,000 houses are expected to be leveled and the Eastern suburbs of Bexley, Dallington and Avonside rest on land so badly liquefied they may never be rebuilt.

The inner city has lost most of its heritage buildings and is still closed to the public - and may be for months.

At least 60,000 of Christchurch's 400,000 people have left for other parts of New Zealand, or Australia. Many will not return. Whole suburbs in the Eastern part of the city are now ghost towns.

Most of Central and Eastern Christchurch is built on a swamp. Besides destroying countless buildings the quake liquefied thousands of acres, depositing subterranean silt and sand over tens of thousands of lawns, gardens, roads, playing fields and parks.

This video will give some idea of the effect.

On the positive side, the relief efforts have been effective and well managed, with lots of voluntary and international help.

Community spirit has been great, despite 2 major earthquakes, thousands of aftershocks and the Pike River coalmine disaster, and even the devastation of the recent Queensland floods that hit our Aussie cousins - all in the last 6 months.

An astrologer/ amateur scientist Ken ring has predicted an even bigger quake for around March 20. Considering he predicted the last 2 quakes, a lot of normally skeptical people are taking him seriously.

Schools are opening again and hundreds of businesses are running out of garages and private homes.

Petrol is easy to buy, even if the price is skyrocketing. The supermarkets are full of food.

Water, power and plumbing are being restored - though apparently Christchurch has exhausted the entire world supply of chemical toilets!

Life is slowly returning to normal, though there will be no closure until all the dead are recovered, named and buried.

We're very grateful people here right now. Very, very mindful of the donations, help and kind wishes that have poured into our city from overseas.

Thank you all.

Christchurch will bounce back, better, brighter and even more beautiful than before.

Especially when we get to host some of the Rugby World Cup - fingers crossed.

My home town of Christchurch was devastated at 12.51 pm today by a 6.3 Richter Scale earthquake.

Though not as big as the 7.1 earthquake last September, it was far shallower and much closer to the city center. Much, much more violent.

At least 65 reported deaths so far. Whole streets flattened and 5 story buildings leveled.

We have at least six major aftershocks since - several over 5.0.

My good friend Andy biked the outskirts of the inner city the afternoon and made this video.

This is shot outside the police cordon and does not show the inner city which looks like a war zone.

My family and friends are all fine. We have power, phone, drinking water, food and a roof over our heads.

Thank you all for the many, many messages of concern.

Trevor Loudon - Another Socialist Weighs in on Arizona

Katha Pollitt writes for The Nation, a key mouthpiece of the far left Institute for Policy Studies.

She has been active in the U.S.'s largest Marxist organization Democratic Socialists of America, in Feminists for Peace and Barack Obama and in the infamous JournoList.

Unsurprisingly she also has something to say about the Arizona killings. Also unsurprisingly she cites Marxist philosopher Michel Foucault and the far left Southern Poverty Law Center.

It was the gun. It was the mental illness. It was the Tea. It was “Second Amendmentremedies” and “reload” and candidates’districts marked with cross hairs. It was glennbeckrushlimbaughmichaelsavagetalkradiotv with its 24/7 fomenting of hatred and contempt for Democrats, its antigovernment paranoia. It was the incivility. It was Arizona. It was the Internet. It was hypermasculinity and contempt for women. It was the gun.

In the Guardian, my Nation colleagues Gary Younge and Max Blumenthal point to Arizona’s poisonous right-wingery, some of it aimed directly at Giffords, a well-liked centrist Democrat: after she voted in favor of healthcare reform, her Tucson office was vandalized; at a 2009 meet-and-greet, a protester dropped a gun.

In a letter to the New York Times, Giffords constituent Ronnie Bergen recalls attending a healthcare forum arranged by the Congresswoman: “the event was packed with anti-Obama people, and the tone was ugly: shouting, rude, menacing individuals…. It was a chilling experience, even for one who had grown up in the bitter politics of the 1960s.” As Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik put it, Arizona has become “the mecca for prejudice and bigotry.”

But you don’t have to be Michel Foucault to understand that mentally ill people express their demons in ways that are culturally—and politically—inflected, and in Arizona that inflection is right-wing antigovernment hysteria. He may never have mentioned Palin (and really, must she always be the center of attention?), but his obsessions—the gold standard, government yranny through mind control, the “second Constitution”— are familiar themes of far-right patriot movements. Mark Potok, who monitors wing-nut extremism for the Southern Poverty Law Center, sees in the jumble of novels on Loughner’s MySpace page a theme of the individual against the totalitarian state, with Mein Kampf and The Communist Manifesto thrown in “as variants of a kind of generalized ‘smash the state’ attitude.”

The left, from Castro, to the Communist Party and Democratic Socialists of America, will ride this train until it runs out of steam.

They know that a lie repeated often enough......

Trevor Loudon - Chinese Company Seeking $450M from U.S. Energy Dept. Stimulus Fund

Major donors to Harry Reid and Barack Obama's campaigns are backing a Chinese company, A-Power Energy Generation Systems. A-Power is a small Chinese manufacturer, founded in 2007 as China’s interest in "green energy" was beginning to take off.

MSNBC reports. Yes you read that right, MSNBC reports,

The wind farm, first announced more than a year ago, would consist of 300 2-megawatt wind turbines, each perched atop a 26-story-tall steel tower and spinning three blades — each half the length of a football field. The farm would span three counties and 36,000 acres in West Texas land best known for its oil.  Dubbed the Spinning Star wind farm, the project’s 600-megawatt capacity is, theoretically, enough to power 180,000 American homes and would be the sixth-largest wind farm in the country.

It is being planned by an unusual joint partnership between the U.S. Renewable Energy Group, a Dallas investment firm with strong ties to Washington and the Democratic Party, and A-Power Energy Generation Systems, an upstart Chinese supplier of wind turbines. Filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission indicate the Chinese are bringing financing and the turbines.

Besides the $450 million stimulus grant, A-Power’s SEC filings indicate the joint-venture also will pursue a Department of Energy-backed loan guarantee.

All too often the response from many who call themselves conservatives is, "it will increase employment and help business, so stop complaining. Sure, it's not ideal to have the Government injecting capital to get the venture off the ground, but in the end it will be best for the economy." But as I pointed out in a recent post, when we allow the Government to get involved with business deals, corruption is never too far away. And inevitably, market-failures will be propped up with tax-payer dollars, leaving struggling, hard-working business owners even worse off.

But it gets better. Key backers of this wind farm initiative are themselves major backers of the Democratic Party.

The investment group’s public face is often Cappy McGarr, a wealthy Texas philanthropist, investor and longtime fixture in Democratic politics, who has given heavily to Democratic candidates across the country and was an early backer of President Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. Joining McGarr in Dallas is Ed Cunningham, a former executive for several large Western entertainment companies in China, a 2002 Democratic senatorial candidate and a former member of Obama’s national finance committee.

Two registered lobbyists with a long history of involvement in Democratic politics, G. John O’Hanlon and Moses Boyd, are the group’s anchors in Washington. O’Hanlon has been a party operative since the 1980s — a protégé of Democratic heavyweight Terry McAuliffe — and has given hundreds of thousands of dollars to Democratic causes. Boyd is a former senior Democratic Capitol Hill staffer turned lobbyist.

All told, these four and their spouses have given more than $1.8 million in campaign donations since 1990, with McGarr and his wife accounting for more than half of that. “That would place them among the top 100 donors of hard money overall...”

We had a very similar situation in New Zealand where Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings was filmed. Warner Brothers began preparation for filming of the NZ $670M two-part Hobbit movie, however unreasonable demands from New Zealand's actor's union caused Warner Brothers to reconsider shooting in New Zealand. However Prime Minister John Key met with Warner Brothers, agreeing to offset their costs by NZ $30M, and actually passing a law through Parliament to enable the film to be made here.

And in other Hobbit news, a casting agent for the movie was fired recently when she told a Hobbit wannabe of Pakistani heritage that her skin tone wasn't light enough. What next? A female seeks to audition for the part of Bilbo and then public outrage when she is turned away?
