"You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness. If we fail, at least let our children and our children's children say of us we justified our brief moment here. We did all that could be done."

Sen. Grassley on Botched Fed Gun-Running Sting: Without a Doubt the Dept. of Justice Was Involved

In an interview with America's Newsroom co-host Bill Hemmer, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) answered questions regarding an evolving House hearing as best he could. After a drug-running sting went wrong, even resulting in the murder of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, Sen. Grassley and Congressman Darrell Issa (R-CA) are trying to get to the bottom of what went wrong and who's to blame.

When asked if somebody's lying when it comes to providing information on the program, Grassley answered, "One of the problems I and Congressman Darrell Issa have had is just getting answers to our questions and getting documents, and those questions being answered in those documents would give me the capability to answer your question."

The senator went on to say that at this point, it appears that what went wrong was the intentional selling of illegal guns meant to be tracked across the border in efforts to arrest those operating at senior levels within dangerous drug cartels.

"Everybody at the grassroots level of the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Division said it wouldn't work, but they were pushed by D.C. to do it. And consequently, the prophecy became accurate when border patrol agent Brian Terry was murdered, and two of these guns were found at the murder scene," Grassley said.

When it comes to where the buck stops in authorizing the program, the Iowa lawmaker asserted that he can be sure of one thing. "Without a doubt, the Department of Justice or the divisions within were involved. But it's difficult to know what's going on without getting the documents we requested."
