"You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness. If we fail, at least let our children and our children's children say of us we justified our brief moment here. We did all that could be done."

White House Pressured Ford to Pull this Advertisement

The Bush and Obama administrations bailed out the auto industry during the economic collapse of 2008-2009. GM and Chrysler took the cash. Ford did not. Taxpayers have taken a multibillion dollar bath on this program of government largesse. Perhaps as a result of its rivals' convalescence, Ford decided to tap into some of the residual anger over Washington's "too big to fail" mentality by positioning itself as an all-American, "standing on our own two feet" company. They sought to refresh the public's memory that they resisted the temptation of government dependency when its rivals raced to the trough. In response, the Obama White House started asking questions, and now the controversial ad has vanished.
