"You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness. If we fail, at least let our children and our children's children say of us we justified our brief moment here. We did all that could be done."

4th Graders Taught They Should Give Up Constitutional Rights In Exchange for Safety

A Florida elementary school teacher's lesson on the First Amendment has some parents speaking out. Amy Harvey says she opened her fourth-grader's backpack and found a sheet of paper on which he wrote, "I am willing to give up some of my constitutional rights in order to be safer or more secure."

Father Aaron Harvey says he was so angry that his blood pressure was high for a few days. His son said that his teacher at Cedar Hills Elementary in Jacksonville, Cheryl Sabb, asked he and some other students to write the statement.

The school district's superintendent expressed "possible concern [...] with a follow-up activity that may have been conducted after the lesson," explaining that the approved First Amendment curriculum was created with the help of local attorneys. The Harveys say they, and other parents, plan to meet with Sabb about the lesson.
