Walter Williams - Up From the Projects

In 1981, Secretary of Health Education and Welfare Patricia Harris wrote in the Washington Post that libertarian economists Walter Williams and Thomas Sowell are "middle class" so they "don't know what it is to be poor."

In fact, Williams grew up in a single-parent household in a poor section of Philadelphia. He was raised by his mother, who was a high school dropout. The family spent time on welfare, and eventually moved into the Richard Allen public housing project. (Sowell, whose father died before he was born, was the son of a maid.)

Drafted into the peacetime Army, Williams eventually earned a PhD from UCLA in the late 1960s and quickly became a sought-after researcher and public intellectual. His best known book, 1982's The State Against Blacks, argues that a major cause of black unemployment is government intervention in the labor market.

Williams' contrarian views have had wide exposure through documentaries, public appearances, and for the past 30 years, a syndicated weekly column. Since 1992, Williams has also been a frequent guest host of Rush Limbaugh's radio show. Now a professor emeritus at George Mason University, Williams has taught at Temple University, California State University-Los Angeles, and other universities.

His new book, Up from the Projects: An Autobiography, is a fascinating look at his childhood, his half-century-long marriage to his recently departed wife, his unusual career path, and the genesis of his views on race, economics, and politics.

Throughout his career, Williams has used his own life to illustrate how government regulations often work to deny opportunities to poor blacks, and his memoir is no exception. For example, Williams recounts that when he was a teenager, he was fired from a great job at a hat factory when a fellow employee complained to the Department of Labor that his boss was violating child labor laws.

Crystal Wright - Why Black Conservatives Are Liberals’ Worst Nightmare

I’m not writing about Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) calling illegal Mexican workers “wet backs” despite liberals demanding I, as a Conservative Black Chick, “respond to his racist comment.” Instead, I'm writing about liberals calling me a coon, Baap B*ch, and c*nt. You know, the under reported story of liberals vicious attacks on black conservatives.

Since Dr. Ben Carson uncorked himself as a black conservative during his speech at the White House Prayer breakfast, he’s been called an “Uncle Tom” and mocked by MSNBC Toure as having “intellectual tumors in his mind.” And of course civil rights attorney Leo Terrell, who told Sean Hannity “Carson is [a] monster...and should stay in the operating room.”

Agitated by the vitriol hurled at Carson, one of the world’s preeminent pediatric neurosurgeons, I thought it was timely to remind everyone that Carson, though a new face to the movement, certainly isn’t the only black conservative to be assailed by the left. On a daily basis, black Janes and Joes are verbally abused for choosing to call themselves Republican or conservative.

Here’s a little sampling of some the hate emails I receive regularly for choosing to exercise my First Amendment right as a BLACK, conservative woman. (Note emails haven’t been altered to correct spelling.)

“Are you one of Ann Coulter's good n**gers? She said their n**gers were better than the democtratic n**gers. Do you agree with that racist?”

And this. . .

“You are a wicked little Baap B*tch.Uttering you hatred for Black Men and our people at the .T.E.A. Party rallies(Tyrranical .Evil Aryan Party and at the C.PA.C. Conservative Political Aaction Committee.WE hope that all Wickedly Beautiful Baap Women Like you Litteraly burn in Hell.”

All the attacks on black conservatives are usually limited to name-calling, and never about policy differences. The left relentlessly calls black conservatives crude names to belittle us into silence, tame us into submission, and intimidate those of us in the closet from coming out. Message: know thy black place.

Why this rabid hate from the left? Because black conservatives challenge the stereotypical black box liberals have put blacks in. According to liberals, blacks must vote Democrat because of the color of their skin. When was the last time anyone demanded to know why a white person voted Democrat or Republican?

The more black conservatives talk about policies of opportunity, individualism, smaller government and less taxation, the more black Americans start questioning why they are voting for Democrats in the first place. They begin asking themselves what have Democrats done for blacks that has been so great?

In a nutshell, black conservatives get other blacks thinking; they awaken the beast within: political choice! This scares the hell out of Democrats because people like Dr. Carson with national exposure dismantle liberal policies of government-based success. Black conservatives threaten to chip away at Democrats’ loyal “Uncle Tom” voter base—the over 90% of blacks who voted for Obama twice and like a herd of sheep have remained loyal to Democrats for the past forty-plus years. In return blacks have witnessed diminished wealth compared to their white counterparts, lower high school graduation rates, and over 70% out of wedlock birth rate compared to 23% in 1964.

Juan Williams wrote recently in the Wall Street Journal that according to Justice Department data from 1980-2008, “ blacks were six times more likely as whites to be homicide victims and seven times more likely as whites to kill.” One could say black Democrats better define the dutiful slave Uncle Tom in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” because he followed his master’s orders and never thought for himself.

Deneen Borelli - CPAC 2013 Analyzed

"I think the message is to stay on message. I think it's very exciting and refreshing that conservatives really are taking over the Republican party, because the problem has been for many, many years is that we've had a moderate establishment republican politicians - the squishy politicians, they're not sticking to their core values, their core principles of smaller government, less spending, lower debt, lower taxes this is what we need really to propel our economy and also to get jobs growing in our country."

CPAC 2013 - Allen West - Liberals Fear Black Conservatives

"Folks, I'm speaking from experience when I tell you that there's nothing on this green earth that a liberal/progressive fears more than a black American who wants a better life and a smaller government.

I'm tired of liberals dividing this country up into little groups, setting them upon each other, breeding spite and envy -- and then having the nerve to accuse conservatives of hatred. In the real world, I see conservatives giving to more charity than liberals, even though their paychecks may be smaller. In the real world, I see conservatives volunteering at adoption agencies, at churches, at bake sales, and the local American Legion post -- while the only charity a progressive sends is a smug sermon on fair share and what fairness is."

Crystal Wright - Anne Romney Shines in Tampa, Makes America Fall in Love with Her and Mitt

Ann Romney just didn’t shine at the Republican National Convention when she spoke Tuesday night, she rocked the hall, owned the stage and won the hearts of conservatives and –dare I say undecided voters. In telling America why she fell in love with Mitt Romney, Ann not only humanized a man who can seem distance, stony at times but also made the case why Romney “will not fail” and is the best man “to lift up America.”

If I was a member of Obama’s re-election campaign, I’d be very afraid after the GOP Convention’s opening act. There were other speakers who set the stage on fire, Utah Congressional candidate Mia Love, Artur Davis, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie but Ann Romney was the star who paved the road for Romney’s acceptance speech Thursday.

Dressed in patriotic red, as she breezed onto the stage, Ann clasped her hands in her knees and just smiled for a moment, taking in the crowd’s excitement for her. “I want to talk to you from my heart about our hearts, she said, “I want to talk to you about love.”

She acknowledged these are tough times for parents who are working harder, longer hours and multiple jobs to take care of their kids. Then almost thumbing her nose in the face of Democrats, who tried to accuse Republicans of waging a war on women, Ann caringly reminded the audience it’s moms and women who are the glue that hold things together.

“It's the moms of this nation -- single, married, widowed -- who really hold this country together. We're the mothers, we're the wives, we're the grandmothers, we're the big sisters, we're the little sisters, and we’re the daughters,” Ann declared.

As Ann described how moms help kids with book reports, care for aging parents, she reminded me of my own mother, who was and is always there for me and my two brothers. It was my mother who cared for her mother, my grandmother diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. It was my mother who nursed her dying brothers in their elderly years and it was my mother who has stood by my father’s side when he was sick.

In telling the story of how she met Mitt Romney, Ann debunked the notion she or her husband always lived on “easy street.” She told us how her father came from nothing to build his own business and George Romney without a college education became a carpenter. Ann said her 42 years of marriage hasn’t been easy, from living in a basement apartment, using a fold down ironing board as their dining room table, to having five boys and her diagnosis with MS and breast cancer. She said she doesn’t have a story book marriage, “what Mitt and I have is a real marriage.”

In an attempt to run from his own record of failure, President Obama has attacked Romney’s success. Ann in a humble tone said, “Mitt wasn’t handed success.” He took a risk, worked hard and never gave up. Isn’t that what we want for our children, to teach them to strive for success not tell them, “try to do okay,” she said.

Finally, Ann explained why her husband doesn’t brag more about himself, something conservatives want him to do as he heads into the final stretch against Obama.

“Mitt doesn't like to talk about how he has helped others because he sees it as a privilege, not a political talking point,” she said.

As Ann ticked through Romney’s other successes turning around the 2002 Olympics, reducing unemployment to 4.7% in Massachusetts and improving schools to one of the best in the nation, I agreed with her “this is the man America needs.”

Ann Romney made Mitt relatable to Americans. So much of what Ann Romney described about her life with Mitt Romney reminded me of my own parents Thomas and Barbara. They were high school sweethearts, have been married for almost 50 years, and are the foundation for my success and grounding in life.

Infused with enthusiasm, charm and humility, Ann stole the hearts of Americans in talking about her husband but more importantly sold us on Mitt Romney, the quiet man who doesn’t brag. She asked Americans to “give him a chance.” After Tuesday night, I think they will. Ann’s a tough act to follow but after 47 years I think Mitt Romney can do it. I can’t wait to hear Mitt’s love affair for America Thursday night.

Jeannie DeAngelis - Obama's 'Precious Legacy' and the Dilemma of Black Voters

Originally posted at American Thinker

Michelle Obama recently tookto the pulpit at the Nashville African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME) 49th General Conference. In an attempt to reignite the same enthusiasm the black community exhibited in 2008 when 96% of that population supported Barack Obama, the first lady was there amongst the faithful preaching a Michelle-style Get Out the Vote homily.

Perhaps sensing a change in her husband's most ardent supporters, in her sermon Mrs. Obama suggested that many African-Americans are ambivalent about the next election. The first lady asked the 10,000 supportive conference attendees, "How many of us have asked someone whether they're going to vote, and they tell us, 'Nah, I voted last time,' or 'Is there really an election going on?'"

Hoping her concern would resonate beyond the conference walls, at one point the first lady sounded as if she was reproving the congregants when she suggested that within the larger black community there was an attitude of ungratefulness. The first lady spoke out against political indifference, saying that "After so many folks sacrificed so much so that we could make our voices heard, so many of us just can't be bothered."

Besides hoping to shame voters into action on Election Day, Michelle Obama also made an effort to recruit political activists by urging the flock to move what she called a "precious legacy" forward that has "paved the way for change in this country."

Mrs. Obama also said, "To anyone who says that church is no place to talk about [political] issues, you tell them there is no place better. Because ultimately," the first lady continued, "these are not just political issues. They are moral issues."

Urging the faithful further, Michelle said, "If a simple fisherman could become the rock upon which Christ built His church, surely we can do our part."

Scripture-quoting aside, it could be that because she and her husband don't attend church regularly, the first lady is unaware that lately there has been anything but indifference resonating from pastors shepherding many black congregations. Maybe not in the AME denomination, but in churches all across America black pastors have already been doing just what Mrs. Obama suggested: they are boldly speaking out about political issues, especially those with moral underpinnings.

By and large, on social issues most churchgoing blacks are conservative. And while many have chosen to overlook the abortion issue in order to support Democrat candidates, it seems that Barack Obama "paving the way for change" by coming out in support of gay marriage was not the type of "change" the black community expected. Moreover, the President's "evolving" opinion on the issue of same-sex marriage is probably not the "precious legacy" African-Americans had in mind when they voted for him in 2008.

Black conservative congressman Allen West (R-FL), well aware of what Michelle seemed clueless about, referred to the controversy surrounding the President "evolving" when he said "I think it's going to cause an incredible discussion in the black community, because, as you know, on Sundays in the black community the most conservative people in America are in those black churches."

From the pulpit of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Washington DC, Reverend Wallace Charles Smith was also vocal about condemning President Obama's recent announcement in support of same-sex marriage. When the reverend boldly proclaimed, "The church is against it," his condemnation was met with resounding shouts of "Amen!" from pews filled with people who almost certainly voted for Barack Obama last time around.

Pastor Emmett Burns, a politically well-connected black minister in Baltimore who supported Obama in 2008, "held an event at Rising Sun Baptist Church to publicly withdraw support from the president over Obama's same-sex marriage support."

Mrs. Obama even suggesting that black pastors are not addressing moral issues proves that the Obamas' ties with the black community are superficial at best. The first lady can talk about change and legacies all she wants, but she couldn't be more out of touch with the deep-seated convictions that reside within the moral belief system of many black people who attend church. It's either that or, like abortion, Michelle and her husband do not consider same-sex marriage a moral issue.

Unaware of the political/moral connection President Obama violated when he came out in support homosexuals marrying, the first lady continued: "But let's be clear, while we're tuning out and staying home on Election Day, other folks are tuning in."

The "tuning out and staying home" mentality the first lady senses may not be ungrateful ambivalence at all, but rather a response to an unexpected situation where the political leanings within the black community that helped ferry Barack Obama into the White House in 2008 have finally been forced to take a back seat to strong moral convictions about the definition of marriage.

Speaking specifically about elected officials, a didactic Mrs. Obama offered the gathering this wonderful advice: "And if you don't like what you see, then let them know," which, if the disinterest and lack of enthusiasm the first lady senses is valid, might be a portion of the black community doing just that.

When it comes to the President's support for gay marriage, the Nashville AME conference that Michelle lectured is likely representative of black churches in general, many of whom don't like what they're hearing. Come Election Day, black pastors and their congregations may very well follow the first lady's recommendation and let Barack Obama know by "tuning out" and staying home.

Star Parker - An America Built to Be Last

The theme President Obama gave to his State of the Union address was “An America Built to Last.”

But his vision would be better described as an “An America Built to Be Last.”

As the president asked us to be patient and keep drinking the same kool-aid he’s been serving up for three years, the New York Times reported that the Federal Reserve’s latest assessment of our economy is that “…a full recovery is years away.”

Even his most loyal constituency, black Americans, is losing patience. In Gallup’s latest tracking poll, black approval rate for Obama was 79 percent. This is seventeen points under the 96 percent of blacks who voted for him in 2008, and the first time that black approval has dropped under 80 percent.

The debate will go on for many years about what caused the horrible economic collapse from which we are still trying to recover.

The president continues to sell the idea, which serves his agenda to continue to expand government, that the cause was insufficiently regulated business.

There is much convincing research, in which the president shows little interest, that government caused it, by mandating expansion of low quality mortgages and enabling this expansion because taxpayers ultimately guaranteed these loans.

But economists are still debating what caused the Great Depression of the 1930’s.

What Americans must come to terms with now is what we choose to believe this country is about, why in the past it seemed to work so well, and why today things are falling apart.

According to the president, everything will be okay if we allow him and his government to continue to build and consolidate power over our lives.

He gave more reasons to grow government and barely lip service to what is tearing our nation apart today and dragging it down.

The major factors driving us into insolvency, spending on entitlement programs – Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid – and covering the interest on our nation’s debt, which is now surpassing the size of our entire economy, got attention in two sentences in an hour plus long speech.

The unraveling of our social fabric doesn’t seem to bother our president a whit.

You would think our nation’s leader would be concerned that today four of every ten of our babies are born to unwed mothers.

He called on “every State to require that all students stay in high school until they graduate or turn eighteen.”

Rather than addressing broken families and why poor kids don’t care about learning, our president thinks he’ll solve this problem by turning our failing public schools into prisons.

It’s nice to know that the president believes what “Republican Abraham Lincoln believed: That government should do for people only what they cannot do better by themselves, and no more.”

But unlike our president, Lincoln was the Great Emancipator. Lincoln’s agenda was freedom.

According to a new poll from the Kaiser Family Foundation, 54 percent feel that the Supreme Court should find the Obamacare mandate forcing every American to buy government defined health insurance unconstitutional. Only 17% agree with this flagrant violation of individual freedom.

Now the Department of Health and Human Services has ruled that religious institutions must, like all employers under the new Obamacare law, provide free birth control and sterilization services as part of health coverage.

Catholic universities and charitable organizations are now left with the choice of violating their religious convictions, not offering health insurance and pay millions of dollars in fines, or just shut down.

Catholic charities serve over 10 million of America’s poor.

Diminished freedom and moral relativism is no way out of the morass we’re in.

An America built on government, as President Obama sees it, severed from our roots as a free people under God, is surely an America “built to be last.”
