Jeannie DeAngelis - Open mic night at the G-20 summit yields a big surprise

Originally posted at American Thinker
The G-20 Summit in Cannes, France was a smashing success. Things went well despite Obama telling some really bad jokes about Nicolas Sarkozy's less-than-movie-star looks and unwittingly confirming for Michelle that he thinks Carla Bruni is a hottie. Waving and running to another group photo, this time for Prime Minister Singh of India, the president actually thought that he was qualified to offer economic advice, despite America's 9% unemployment and mountain of debt, to a world on the brink of economic Armageddon.

After all those missteps, it's wonderful to know that France and America emerged from the summit standing side-by-side on common ground. Years after the Freedom Fries controversy, Nic and Barry's friendship was rekindled when it was revealed that both men can't stand the prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyhu.

Being the Scripture scholar he is, Barack Obama should know that Jesus warned:
Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees. They just pretend to be godly. Everything that is secret will be brought out into the open. Everything that is hidden will be uncovered. What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight. What you have whispered to someone behind closed doors will be shouted from the rooftops.
There you have it. Two yeasty Pharisees, one who switched off the Teleprompter but forgot to check the microphone and another whose vertical challenges put him in perfect proximity to be heard telling Obama that he "can't stand" Benjamin Netanyahu and that the Israeli leader is a "liar."

Not that Nicolas initiated the conversation. According to a French publication, after the press conference where Obama laid out a plan of action to save the world from economic destruction, the two men retreated to a private room. It was there that Obama allegedly broached the subject and criticized "Sarkozy for not having warned him that France would be voting in favor of the Palestinian membership bid in UNESCO despite Washington's strong objection to the move."

The French leader and the US President were so anxious to rip Bibi apart that they blurted out their feelings openly, both of them unaware that the private conversation was being broadcast for over three minutes on the headsets still on positioned on the ears of journalists.

In order to protect the confidentiality of Sarkozy and Obama, the reporters who heard the insulting remarks were then asked to protect the two leaders by "signing an agreement to keep mum on the embarrassing comments."

One member of the media confirmed that "there were discussions between journalists and they agreed not to publish the comments due to the sensitivity of the issue." Like what? The sensitive issue that Barack Obama is a phony, two-faced, Israel-hating liar?

One good thing is that the broadcast of Sarkozy and Obama's private hatemongering session confirmed for Mr. Netanyahu once and for all that he was right not to use the phones in the White House and that in the future he should not turn his back on the guy who hugged the Islamic Turk at the G-20. As for Jewish voters leaning toward Obama in the 2012 election: Do you finally get it?

So it's official: Rather than steer the French president toward amity with Israel, historic Nobel Peace Prize winner Barack Obama added to the anti-Israel sentiment that presently permeates the world, replying, "You're fed up with him, but I have to deal with him every day!"

Which is exactly how most of America feels about you right about now, Mr. President: "Fed up" and sick of dealing with you every day.

Jeannie DeAngelis - The G-He’s-Funny Summit

A more appropriate title for the 2011 G-20 Summit would have been the G-He’s-Funny Summit because while there Barack Obama was a veritable barrel of laughs. The first ha-ha was Obama going to the summit in the first place, especially since he intended to contribute economic advice.

While in France he hugged the wrong people, behaved like a kindergartener in a class picture, and while trying his ever-present hand at stand-up comedy, insulted France’s president and infuriated an American ally.

The President renowned for bowing to dictators, tyrants, and Saudi kings diplomatically shook hands with Angela Merkel, David Cameron, and Nicolas Sarkozy, and said “hello” to President Hu in Chinese, saving the bear hugs for Islamist Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. In the presence of the Turkish Prime Minister, Obama skipped his traditional curtsy and warmly burrowed his face into Erdoğan’s neck.

After greeting Argentinean President Christina Kirschner, who was recently elected in a landslide, and claiming to be unconcerned about a second term, Obama verbally elbowed France’s president, also up for reelection next year, saying, “So Nicolas, we all have to take lessons.”

The President must have either been feeling gregarious or someone unplugged the Teleprompter for a second, because after implying that Sarkozy needed coaching on how win an election from a Latin-American woman, Obama attempted to evoke laughs at the expense of Nicolas’ famously less-than-movie-star looks.

With his G-20 buddy standing nearby, Obama said, “I want to make mention that this is our first meeting since the arrival of the newest Sarkozy, and so I want to congratulate Nicolas and Carla on the birth of Giulia.” Then the President inserted this unscripted laugh line: “And I informed Nicolas … that I am confident that Giulia inherited her mother’s looks rather than her father’s, which I think is an excellent thing.”

Apparently, Obama’s attempt at getting a laugh funny “fell flat.” He’s usually so funny; it’s hard to figure out why those in attendance claimed that President Sarkozy “did not appear greatly amused.” Not only that, but some French media outlets were insulted. Celebrity website Stargora said, “Barack Obama has openly and publicly ridiculed the physical [appearance of] Nicolas Sarkozy,” adding that Obama’s comments were delivered “without pity.” Ouch!

It’s too bad Obama’s timing when telling a joke that undermines international relations isn’t as finely tuned as his ability to ruin photo ops for world leaders.

Just a few months ago Barry acted like a disruptive child and turned a UN group photo into a joke. At the time, the President was so overcome with friendly exuberance that just as the flashbulb flashed, America’s very own jolly jokester waved to an imaginary friend, completely blocking Mongolian President Tsakhia Elbegdorj’s face. Tsakhia now knows that if Obama attends another event and there’s another group picture, before smiling for the camera he should slip on a traditional Mongolian shepherd’s hat so at least he has a fighting chance to locate himself in the picture.

It could be that the Mongolian president alerted Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India, to the now-famous Barry Block, because at the G-20 Sikh Manmohan was wise enough to wear a dastar before agreeing to participate in a group portrait with the American president.

Good thing, because overcome again with uncontrolled conviviality Barack waved to God-knows-who to alert them that he was in formation compliance and did so just as the G-20 class photo was snapped, managing to obscure all but Singh’s gray turban with his raised hand.

Undeterred, and especially after the rousing reception he received for some of his antics leading up to the press conference, the President’s comedy routine really started to roll when he got behind the podium. Obama was there because he must have thought that the smashing success of Stimulus I, which he defines as “passing the strongest financial reforms since the Great Depression,” coupled with the slight dip in unemployment from 9.1% to 9%, was reason enough to go to Cannes, France and offer input on how he managed turn the bleak US job picture around.

After acknowledging the dire condition of the world economy, to lighten things up the Constant Campaigner threw a comedic curve ball to the G-20 audience, saying that “the least of my concerns at the moment is the politics of a year from now.”

The hilarity continued when Obama said Republicans “prefer to protect 300,000 millionaires” to putting “hundreds of thousands of people to work.” That statement may have required the help of a canned laugh track, because even polite socialist European types know that to the detriment of 260 million people, this guy, to benefit 30 million uninsured, hopes to gut the world’s finest health care system.

Even at a serious event where the world’s fiscal future hangs in the balance, braggadocio can be amusing, especially when someone with Barack Obama’s disastrous economic record crows about financial prowess.

Barack is either a great comedian or totally deluded, because he told the G-He’s-Funny crowd that he stabilized and is growing the American economy. It’s hard to believe, but he actually did find a way to congratulate himself by saying “In terms of my — you know, my track record on the economy…when I came in [the] US economy had contracted by 9%. The largest contraction since the Great Depression a little over a year later the economy was growing by 4%.”

The ideological ramrod then went on to talk about the Republicans’ “rigid ideological positions.” He told the audience that, no thanks to the Congressional Republicans, his jobs bill has the potential to “solve all our problems… grow our economy…put people back to work [and] reduce our deficit.”

According to the funniest act at the G-20, “it’s just a matter of setting politics aside and constantly remembering the election is one year away.” Obama told skittish world leaders, fully aware that world economy is careening toward global insolvency, that “If we do that, there’s no reason we can’t solve these problems. Alright?”

And so, after the touchy-feely Turkish clinch controversy, the gesticulation gaffe, and the French first daughter compliment faux pas were topped only by the hilarious economic/jobs bill comments, the President of the United States departed Cannes awash in the type of hysterical infamy that places him in the same company as comedy giants Pauly Shore, Peewee Herman, and Carrot Top.

Jeannie DeAngelis - Barack's Presidential Protocol Bloopers

Originally posted at American Thinker
Barack Obama is a man who marches to the beat of his own drummer. The President of the United States is so laid-back he disregards protocol, and if his behavior were to be measured in drum beats, the syncopation would certainly be considered off-tempo. Either Barack Obama is ignorant when it comes to international decorum, is totally devoid of personal self-awareness, or believes the superiority of his presence supersedes the need for propriety.

On the whole, the Obamas have had their fair share of faux pas on the world stage. For instance, a few months after Obama was sworn into office, on a trip to Britain, Michelle was so overtaken with fondness for the Queen of England that she spontaneously gave her a hug.

Protocol is defined as "a code prescribing strict adherence to correct etiquette and precedence (as in diplomatic exchange and in the military services)." Precedence was certainly broken when America's touchy-feely first lady, who thankfully had the wherewithal to skip the fist bump, treated the elderly royal to what the British press described as a close, demonstrative clinch.

Michelle is probably just the warm cuddly type, someone who likes to reach out with her $42,000 Katie Davis diamond-encrusted arms and touch people. Michelle Obama could very well be the Barney of the political world. There's nothing wrong with that, except when Mrs. Obama mistakenly oversteps Muslim religious mores that prohibit physical interaction between males and females, which is exactly what happened during the Obamas' visit to Indonesia.

First Michelle "Whatever you do don't touch the queen" Obama embraced the queen, and then in Indonesia, clearly oblivious to religious protocol, she shook hands with conservative Muslim Information Minister Tifatul Sembiring.

When it comes to "avoiding contact with women not related to him," Mr. Sembiring who "flaunts[s] piety," is on par with Queen Elizabeth and her reputation for priggish evasion of social physical contact. Yet, in both cases, Michelle Obama's warm nature was able to cut through Muslim orthodoxy and English chilliness with a firm grip and a loving grab!

Breaking cultural social conduct rules must be a family trait, because on many occasions Obama has emulated his wife in breaches of protocol, and we're not talking forgetting to raise a pinky while drinking Earl Grey with the queen.

Barack Obama has bowed to the wrong people, forgotten to put his hand over his heart for the national anthem, and snuck out of the White House without the press corps to go to his daughter's soccer game. The Commander-in-Chief shook hands with a Marine while boarding Marine One, and he met with the Dalai Lama against China's objections and then had the holy man leave out the back entrance, in the dead of winter, shod in flip-flops, past questionably stained snow and garbage bags full of rotting potato peels.

Arguably, like a young ring bearer with his finger up his nose heading toward the altar, all those incidents could be written off as a political neophyte fumbling around, trapped in an awkward learning curve. However, where in the heck was Chief of Protocol of the United States, Capricia Penavic Marshall, when Obama and Michelle got a chance to make up for Shelley's bear-hugging the queen?

Based on the last go-round with the iPod and the impromptu clinch, Ms. Marshall should have given the President a short run-through and let him know that "God Save the Queen" is not mood music to lend a stirring backdrop when toasting a British monarch. Moreover, Obama's Chief of Protocol could at least call in body language expert Tonya Reiman to tell the President that if all else fails, if you look around the table and everyone has a look on their faces similar to Michelle on a good day, maybe it's time to shut up and let the music take over.

"God Save the Queen" from the Obamas' fumbling aside, Barack's behavior during a group photo op at the UN during an Open Government Partnership event even trumps the time he skipped the funeral of Polish President Lech Kaczynski to go golfing. Standing in the middle of what looks like a class picture, a smiling Obama, caught up in the excitement of the moment, did the unthinkable -- he waved.

Not only did the President break with protocol, but as the other 29 leaders in the photo all stood with their hands at their sides or clasped in front of them, Obama looked like he was doing a dry run of the oath of office he thinks he'll be taking when he's sworn in as President of the Planet.

The completely self-absorbed Barack waved to his fans, and in so doing completely blocked the face of Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj, the president of Mongolia, from the picture. Next time Tsakhiagiin is placed next to Obama during a group photo, just to be sure, he should don a western Mongolian fur-trimmed hat so at least there's a clue as to who he is.

Time and again, it seems as if Michelle and Barry do the waltz while the world does the Macarena. So here we are -- another day, another awkward incident. Who knows, next time Obama may well show up at a skiing event bedecked in a Speedo, flippers and snorkeling gear.

Even still, maybe if Capricia Penavic Marshall can keep her footing on the way to the White House screening room, now might be as good a time as any to schedule a PowerPoint presentation on the diversity of protocol.

Henceforth, giving Obama proper procedural instruction could spare a lot of people raising their eyebrows and looking around the room for reassurance that Barack Obama enthusiastically giving the Vulcan salute at a UN function is not the figment of a "Dubonnet and Gin" imagination.

Jeannie DeAngelis - General Obama’s Military Gaffe Machine

Normally, it’s kind to be sympathetic toward a person when they slip up – it happens. One should always extend mercy toward gaffe-prone people because making a public error is an uncomfortable, adrenaline-producing event for anyone to endure.

However, Obama visiting the 10th Mountain Division and confusing a deceased war hero with a living Medal of Honor winner is inexcusable, especially because Barack Obama fancies himself more qualified to direct a war than the General he appointed.

For that type of attitude, when it comes to matters of warfare the President deserves no pity for mixing up the deceased Jared Monti with a very much alive Sal Guinta when making the following comment:
"First time I saw 10th Mountain Division, you guys were in southern Iraq. When I went back to visit Afghanistan, you guys were the first ones there. I had the great honor of seeing some of you because a comrade of yours, Jared Monti, was the first person who I was able to award the Medal of Honor to who actually came back and wasn’t receiving it posthumously."
It wasn’t Jared Monti but Staff Sergeant (SSG) Sal Guinta of the 173rd Airborne, who fought in both Iraq and Afghanistan, who was informed that he would be given the award at the White House by the President, who personally thanked the soldier for “his service and extraordinary bravery in battle.”

If placing a Medal of Honor around the neck of the only living recipient of the award isn’t enough to make you remember his name, what is?

Worse still, if hugging the grieving parents of a soldier who came home from Afghanistan in a flag-draped coffin doesn’t make you commit to memory the name of Sergeant First Class (SFC) Jared Monti, what exactly does it take?

Evidently, bestowing upon Monti a posthumous medal didn’t impress Barack Obama enough to have the man’s name burned into his consciousness, which indicates that maybe it would be best if the President reconsiders directing a war.

Yet, Barack Obama telling soldiers that he presented the Medal of Honor to a living Jared Monti, who’s been deceased since 2006, isn’t all for naught. The error provides a service to the nation by reestablishing a few important points for those still caught up in Obama fever.

First, it once again confirms that if it’s not written on the Teleprompter Barack Obama is clueless, and second, for those who thought otherwise, it proves to the skeptical that we’re dealing with a man who is disengaged, distant, cold and robotic; when Obama speaks, what comes out of his mouth oftentimes doesn’t come from his heart.

Either that or the present Commander-in-Chief is incapable of focusing long enough to remember the names of the men and women who died in the war whose direction he’s decided to usurp. It almost seems impossible that a person could actually read such a touching speech about a dead soldier’s life, values, and death, and then forget his name.

In all fairness, President did a stand up thing and apologized to the father of the deceased soldier, which Jared Monti’s father accepted. However, an apology doesn’t address the original blunder. If the President can’t keep living and dead war heroes straight, it could get tricky transitioning out of the war Jared Monti fought and died in without incidences of further confusion.

The intricate synchronization of troop withdrawal, Afghani national security force assessment, and keeping track of the political pulse of America may be too much without the help of the Pentagon for a guy traveling to “57 states” to raise millions for reelection. It is likely to be difficult for the President to accomplish the singular purpose of breathing life into a disillusioned base at the same time he’s concentrating on doing the exact opposite of what seasoned military professionals advise.

The Medal of Honor mix-up proves that aspiring military tactician Barack Obama should rethink rejecting the advice of the Pentagon and refrain from drawing down more troops from Afghanistan than recommended at this time, a course of action Obama planned to execute “despite warnings from his military commanders,” most of whom maintain that “recent security gains are fragile.”

Thus, if Barack Obama decides to stand firm and refuse the counsel of knowledgeable and experienced commanding officers and insist on using a war for political purposes, the future holds the potential to be as humiliating for the President as his shocking inability to recall whether those he decorated at a Medal of Honor ceremony are dead or alive.
