Austin Hill - What IRS Scandal?

“Is this still America?” Congressman Kevin Brady (R-Texas) asked rhetorically last Friday, as he and other members of the House Ways and Means Committee questioned IRS officials about the agency’s “targeting” scandal. With all due respect to the Congressman, here’s a rhetorical answer: this is Obama’s America, and it is unlike anything we’ve known before. And here are, perhaps, a couple of more pertinent questions that we should all be asking right now: do sufficient numbers of Americans actually see how our country has been transformed over the past four years or so, and do sufficient numbers of us care about it?

Conservative America has been ranting and raving over the past several days, as the truth of the Obama Administration’s IRS scandal slowly unfolds. “They Knew Last June” a headline at Drudgereport.Com stated, as it linked to a Wall Street Journal article suggesting that “high ranking” administration officials knew about the targeting of conservative and religious organizations last June in the midst of the President’s re-election campaign. Similarly, other groups and individuals compared the crisis to President Richard Nixon’s Watergate scandal, and quickly concluded that Obama’s IRS scandal is far worse.

Objectively speaking, this scenario is horrific. Yet the indignant blog posts and impugning Facebook remarks quickly become irrelevant to a culture that neither understands, nor cares about the injustice of the IRS targeting certain people groups. And if you don’t think that it’s a “tough sell” to get people to actually care about this, consider these two realities:

Participation in America’s labor force is dreadfully low: The labor statistic that gets the most attention in the media on a regular basis is the unemployment rate, yet look beneath the headlines, and you’ll find a more enlightening figure known as the “labor force participation rate.” This data point offers a clear picture of what percentage of the population is working, and what percentage is – for whatever reason-not working. And for the past three years, the labor force participation rate has been just slightly over 60%, which is roughly a thirty year low.

Furthermore, over the past four years a staggering 49% of American households have been receiving some sort of monthly government welfare benefit, while President Obama has slated for a $500 billion annual expansion of direct welfare payments to households between now and 2016. Why is this relevant to the IRS scandal? It’s pretty simple. Logic would suggest that those who choose to live off of government subsistence are probably less likely to be critical of their government, even in the face of malfeasance – to do otherwise would be tantamount to biting the hand that feeds you. And, in any event, government welfare recipients are likely less inclined to either operate non-profit groups, or to donate to them. Put yourself in these shoes, and then realize that the IRS scandal is too easily dismissed as “somebody else’s problem.”

Faith-based Americans have, at least for the time being, fully embraced big government: One might think that the IRS scandal would have special relevance for American religious groups, given the discovery that an IRS agent demanded that a non-profit prolife organization reveal “the content of your members’ prayers.” The emergence of new government “prayer monitors” here in the U.S. is eerily reminiscent of things that Jews encountered in the early days of Hitler’s Germany (before he brought about the Holocaust), or that Christians and Jews alike faced in the former Soviet Union.

But try searching for news last week about Christian groups protesting this egregious new government intrusion in to private religious practice. You probably won’t find any. What you will find, however, are lots of headlines noting both Protestant and Catholic groups asking for more government.

Specifically, after the House Agriculture Committee chose to cut $2.5 billion in funding for the federal Food Stamps program last week, several Protestant and Catholic groups are stamping their feet demanding that the funding be restored. Do an online search for that, specifically, and you’ll find plenty of headlines.

History demonstrates that a government which is big enough to meet one’s need for food is a government that is big enough to strip away one’s right to worship freely, and logic suggests that you can’t credibly demand government intervention in to one area of private life while demanding that government stay out of another. But never mind history and logic. The cries of American Christians demanding more government welfare are – at least for the time being – far louder and more plentiful than Christians who are decrying the threats to their liberty.

Is the IRS scandal serious, and might it lead to criminal charges? Yes, and yes. But the root of our nation’s problems won’t be addressed until Americans abandon their ambivalence about big, abusive government.

On behalf of the progressive "FORWARD" movement, with a near-religious zeal that far exceeds the bellicose fervor liberals accuse conservatives of displaying, Obama supporters in the IRS went about the business of discriminating against social welfare groups as well as targeting those with opposing religious and political views.

It was during the 2012 presidential debates, when referring to the tragic events that took place in Benghazi, that Barack Obama said the following: "Ultimately, as commander-in-chief, I'm responsible, and I don't shy away from that responsibility."

Yet, for some reason, when it comes to the IRS scandal, the president seems hesitant to pretend to shoulder the blame for what took place at the largest U.S. government agency under his jurisdiction. Then again, in all fairness, Obama being expected to take the hit for both Benghazi and the IRS is certainly more bogus culpability than one irresponsible president should be asked to handle.

Which raises the question: is it possible that in an effort to make Obama appear unimpeachable, two prominent big-government liberals are purposely contradicting the partisan vindictiveness in which the agency enthusiastically indulged on the president's behalf?

Consider this: on May 11th, just as the IRS story was gaining momentum, at an Eastern Kentucky University commencement ceremony while speaking to 600 education, business, and technology graduates, the first lady unexpectedly encouraged her audience to converse with the very people the Internal Revenue has tried for four years to shut up.

In 2009, with the president's tacit approval, the DHS publicly portrayed the right wing as a bunch of hateful, anti-government racists. So why would the first lady suddenly suggest that college graduates interconnect with the president's political nemeses?

Checking herself, Mrs. Obama did add, "And if you're a Republican, have a chat with a Democrat. Maybe you'll find some common ground, maybe you won't." Trust me, they won't!

Now, either Michelle was attempting to find innovative ways to gather names to submit to the IRS for future audits, or she was hoping to quell a controversy whose impetus was clearly the work of dedicated sycophants helping to advance her husband's hyperpartisan agenda.

Mrs. Obama may have also thought that promoting bipartisan interaction would corroborate the phony contention that Obama was about to make that he was absolutely shocked -- shocked! -- that the IRS would single out the very same people he enthusiastically singles out on a regular basis.

As if that's not out of character enough, despite the IRS targeting Catholic professors, a Jewish group, and a world-renowned evangelist, not to mention asking for outlandish things such as the content of pro-life prayers, Michelle segued from repartee to religion. The first lady, 'for the first time in her adult life,' suggested that when not in the throes of tearing through free contraceptives, college grads should drop in on religious congregations.

Mrs. Obama's spiritual advice seemed to imply that even if a right-wing bitter clinger were delivering the sermon, Obama-approved religiosity could be realized by reaching out "with an open mind and an open heart" to other faiths.

Notwithstanding the Internal Revenue Service forcibly limiting conservative Americans' ability to reach out to anyone, Mrs. Obama then pointed out "When we only talk to people who think like we do, we just get stuck in our ways." Lest we forget, the woman offering advice on how to be more flexible is the same person so determined to control what Americans eat that she's even burrowed her way into zoos and museums in a relentless effort to redesign kiddie menus to comply with her specifications.

Zoo or no zoo, Michelle is not alone. In what may well be yet another stunning effort to shield the president from criticism, happily stuck-in-his-ways former Obama campaign advisor David Axelrod similarly inserted his opinion into the IRS mêlée. Axelrod made the surprising admission that the very government his hero is in the process of growing is too vast to handle for the guy doing the growing.

Rather than expound upon the merits of a bloated bureaucracy, notorious big-government proponent David Axelrod argued on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" that the immense régime Obama has spent years cultivating, due to its immensity, could not be managed by anyone, let alone Barack Obama.

To understand the absurdity of such a statement coming from Mr. Axelrod, of all people, one should think of it this way: it's David Axelrod who helped political neophyte Obama steal the keys to the big-government 18-wheeler. Then, unable to steer the oversized vehicle, the president proceeded to mow down half the country. Now Axelrod, Barack Obama's principal enabler, has the gall to claim the president was way too young to drive?
One thing's for sure, despite his bravura, since winning reelection the president has not only proven that he can't drive, but also that he's figured out nothing, fixed nothing, and done nothing constructive, let alone been held accountable for the chaos he's created.

That's why there has to be an ulterior motive for the Axelrod/Obama combined effort. Were it not to put distance between the president and the Internal Revenue Service, Mrs. Obama would never suggest that college graduates reject the kind of partisanship the ideological tax collection agency embraced. Moreover, David Axelrod would be the last person on the planet to stress the impossibility of supervising the very agency to which Barack Obama just handed the oversight of healthcare for 300 million people.

With that in mind, it's clear that based on the uncharacteristic rhetoric coming from the president's closest allies, Barack Obama has plans to deflect all the blame for the IRS scandal onto the overzealous "civil servants" David Axelrod claims reside "deep within the bowels of the IRS."

Doug Giles - Holy Cannibalism - Bat Man: Liberals Are Eating Liberals

Grab some popcorn, folks. Pull up a chair. Get yourself a 6 pack. No … a 12pack and join with me and other liberty-minded folks as we watch the Left finally sink their comedic and inquisitive teeth into the rotted flesh of the Hope & Crap Machine that we’ve been caterwauling about for the last five, seems like twenty, years.

I don’t know about you guys but last week was a little gift from God as we got to see the Lame Stream Media get a modicum of game and finally call Obama and his ilk out on the carpet for their Benghazi Bullsmack, their egregious bullying of patriotic non-profits by the IRS and the Department of Just-Us’ tawdry hacking of the AP’s iPhones.

Chief amongst my joys during the previous seven days was watching John Stewart slam dance Obama, night after night, for BHO’s Eddie Haskellesque prevarications, his Clintonian verb parsing and his OJ-like blame-shifting.

The Daily Show’s host vehemently ripped into Obama, stating BHO and the IRS vindicated conspiracy theorists by purposefully hamstringing non-profit applications sought by freedom loving citizens. Stewart also hammered away at el Presidente‘s supposedly “not knowing” about the IRS’ greasy tactics and the DOJ’s egregious 1st amendment breech “until he heard it on the news like we did.” Stewart said, “I wouldn’t be surprised if President Obama learned Osama bin Laden had been killed when he saw himself announce it on television.”

However, the crème de le crème was served on Wednesday night when John finally acknowledged that outfits like Fox News, who’ve been seriously miffed for many moons at Obama’s bullying tactics, were, after all, right and had every reason to be outraged.

Stewart, went on to compare Barack to disgraced former President Richard Nixon and/or Mr., Magoo. For those not hip to Mr. Magoo, he was a cartoon character who caused a lot of chaos because of his nearsightedness that was aggravated by his obstinate refusal to admit the problem. BTW, people and animals that had the misfortune to cross paths with Mr. Magoo usually left that encounter thinking he was a lunatic verses just being merely nearsighted. What’s that they say about “life imitating art?”

As Stewart acknowledged, conservatives and libertarians have been pointing out the obvious for a good long time, but last week the tide turned and now comedians, journalists and talk show hosts of the progressive persuasion are screaming, Whiskey … Tango … Foxtrot.

Heck, Mr. “Thrill-Up-My-Leg” Chris Matthews has seemingly lost his Obama buzz saying, in light of BHO’s worst week ever and his evident cover-ups, that, “President Obama obviously likes giving speeches more than he does running the executive branch … What part of the presidency does Obama like? He doesn’t like dealing with other politicians — that means his own cabinet, that means members of the congress, either party. He doesn’t particularly like the press…”

Holy crikey, Chris! You’re sounding like Hannity. Jesus must be coming back soon.

Yep, folks, it appears as if Obama’s crabbiness, condescension and his constant “it wasn’t me, man … I didn’t know” -- when he and his ilk are caught red-handed doing something sick -- is no longer ignorable even by those who cheerfully carried water for him.

This leaves me to believe this administration might want to put on a cup because it could now get really rough.

Barack Obama Scandals - AP - IRS - Benghazi

Benghazi, IRS and AP scandals reveal Obama's culture of corruption. News that the IRS targeted conservative groups for intense scrutiny is just one in a series of revelations pointing to a culture of expediency and intolerance in the Obama White House that corrupts this administration.

Consider the September slayings of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other U.S. diplomats in Benghazi. If the attack were revealed to be undertaken by terrorists, it posed a grave embarrassment to the president's anti-terrorism strategy—eight weeks before the election.

On September 12, the Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs wrote in an email, "The group that conducted the attacks, Ansar al-Sharia, is affiliated with Islamic terrorists."
If your opponents are evil, anything goes.

Yet, just days later on the Sunday talk shows, UN Ambassador Susan Rice characterized the incident as the result of spontaneous street demonstrations inspired by an anti-Muhammad YouTube video.

Obama Care, having passed through the Senate on a slight-of-hand, has been contentious from the start, and the Congress has not appropriated as much funds as Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius would like to implement the law.

To do the work of HHS, she has sought large contributions from private health care companies to liberal non-profit groups. With health care so heavily regulated, it is hard to characterize these donations as voluntary.

No doubt, favors rendered will be returned, and it smacks of Chicago-style cronyism and corruption.

Now we learn the Justice Department misused subpoena powers to engage in sweeping fishing expeditions through Associated Press and personal phone records—clearly an effort to stifle investigative reporting that the American Civil Liberties Union quickly branded "an unacceptable abuse of power."

In 2010 the IRS began targeting conservative political groups seeking non-profit status for intense scrutiny and harassment. Former IRS Commissioner Douglas Schulman and the White House would have us believe they were unaware of this targeting, and Mr. Schulman was adamant in denials at Congressional Hearings on March 22, 2012.

However, we now learn senior IRS officials were informed of inappropriate conduct two months later, but the Congress was not informed.

The White House can be expected to argue that the targeting was the work of overzealous underlings at the IRS inappropriately exercising discretion—much like the Nixon campaign thugs who broke into Watergate.

This fails to come to terms with the culture of contempt, cultivated by President Obama and other Democratic leaders, toward those who disagree with their progressive ideas.

President Obama's appearance of boredom and disinterest toward Governor Romney during the first presidential debate, and Vice President Biden's disrespectful grinning at Vice-Presidential candidate Paul Ryan, were an indication of something dangerously wrong with the Washington political culture. Many conservatives view Democrats, as not merely wrong but stupid, and many liberals view Republicans as not merely wrong but evil.

If your opponents are evil, anything goes.

Campaigns can get that way, but the conduct of the president requires a higher standard, and he should constrain his lieutenants' more visceral instincts. Instead, President Obama cultivates a culture of anything goes to defeat opponents and advance his liberal agenda.

Underlings act accordingly—any good manger will tell you subordinates exercising discretion take their cues from the conduct of their boss and the messaging of the CEO.

The folks that committed the worst offenses at the IRS were civil servants and three levels below Commissioner; however, the IRS is not a public service that attracts advocates of limited government. You have to be a believer in government—lots of it—to make a career as a tax collector and to target political groups seeking to reduce taxes and spending, and criticizing how the country is being run.

The president's contempt for political opponents and dissent, and expediency in delivering results, has corrupted the most basic functions of government, and emboldened those with personal agendas to threaten our liberties.

Kevin McCullough - A Bitter-Clinger's Non-Remorse

Last week the executive branch of our nation's government seemed recklessly ignorant of nearly everything related to their job. For a group of highly educated, highly accomplished, highly perched folks who seem to regularly look down on regular Americans they seemed extraordinarily ignorant of things they should at least have basic knowledge of.


The President claimed he had no idea of the findings of the IRS' Inspector General's report citing systemic agency wrong doing until he "saw it on the news (like the rest of the American people...)" The Attorney General said, "I don't know" so many times before congressional committees last week that private citizens began doing montages of the collected admission of ignorance for their YouTube channels. Then on Friday--trying the President's tactic--the outgoing IRS Commissioner reverted back to being unable to know anything until he had seen it "in the press."

While campaigning in 2008 & 2012 this administration asserted things all the time. When they made assertions they seemed nearly offended if someone questioned them. For after all they are a bunch of highly educated, highly accomplished, highly perched folks who seemed to think they had the right to look down on regular Americans.

But that's largely the way it's been for much of the last few years.

When running for office this President referred to people who knew their Constitution (normally in spite of their public education, seldom because of it), and worshipped God, as "Bitter Clingers."

After winning office he had his Secretary of Homeland Security classify people who lawfully owned firearms, happened to go to church, happened to respect the lives of unborn children, happen to have previously served in the nation's military, happen to strongly support the nuclear family, happen to pay their taxes, happen to walk dogs, or happen to wake up on Tuesdays and make it to their place of employment, labeled "potential extremists."

Meanwhile he removed "Islamic terrorism" from the White House lexicon, and called acts of terrorism on American soil "workplace violence."

The scandals bleeding profusely from the executive branch this week have been both acknowledged and denied by that branch of government. Apologized for and defended by the President's team. Condemned and excused by executive branch appointees.

And while this duplicitous approach seems to have now been noticed for the very first time by much of the White House press corp, in reality, we-the-people, have been putting up with this behavior since the first year of the Obama administration.

The difference now: the press is finally reporting on that their two-faced nature. So smart they should never be questioned in their assertions, but ignorant beyond degree when wrong doing takes places in their departments, offices, and White House.

John Stewart, hardly a conservative apologist by any stretch, made one of the strongest points of this last week when he observed that the last "arrow in the quiver" for the administration had been their believability and trust. The President mocked and disputed the idea that any American should ever mistrust their government--for instance--on the issue of guns being confiscated from regular citizens. Stewart followed that clip with a CBS News clip showing evening anchor Scott Pelley announcing the IRS' admission to systematically and systemically targeting what in essence amounted to groups of people that were expressly opponents of Obama policies.

But the real low-water mark this week came when journalists across the nation realized that while they had basically reported to the American people for the last six years that the President was a man of trust--they themselves discovered their phone lines, conversations, numbers dialed, tips shared, and sources outed--all in the hands of the administration.

At least the journalists of America were smart enough to figure out that in previous administrations when investigations were done to find someone in the administration who was leaking information to the press--it normally wasn't the journalists who were spied on, and treated with suspicion.

Then came the justification memes in the news cycles. The fact that David Axelrod and Steven Miller both ended up arguing that the American government is in essence "so big" that no one can fully know what was going on "below" them only served to reinforce what millions of Americans of every political stripe already believed.

Either through malfeasance or through ignorant negligence a big centralized government will crush the freedoms, rights, and protections of the "free" individual.

The distinct problem for the administration at this point is that so many facts are being revealed, so many wrongs have been committed, and so many of them point directly to a motive that seems to address a President's ambition to be re-elected, that this President will more or less find himself on defense whether each and every act involved him or not.

The very same way the left punished President Bush for the actions of those involved in Abu Graib, even though he had nothing to do with the acts committed. Obama's scandals are in the same buildings, committed by people that meet with him or his cabinet every day, and who knew his mind, and followed his wishes.

The fact that the President, the Attorney General, and the outgoing IRS Commissioner, came out looking like tweedle dee, and tweedle dumb and dumber--while openly admitting to nothing, but saying they had perfectly good motives for all of it, points to one very big problem for them.

As the whistleblowers line up, there will not be enough cover for everyone, and low level resignations will not cut it.

I've believed it since his days in the Illinois Senate, President Obama is a more strident purist in his leftist agenda for America than Bill Clinton ever was. But Clinton was the more clever operative. The Obama team's consistent chorus of, "Uh... I don't know... I only saw what was on the tee-vee," has already lost its shine.

We are about to see one of the ugliest chapters in elective politics, and the administration has only itself to thank for it.

Judge Jeanine Pirro - No One In This Administration Knows ANYTHING

The president didn't know that the Inspector General was investigating his IRS for targeting political enemies. The president didn't know anything about his Justice Department's seizure of Associated Press phone records. The Attorney General didn't know anything about his department's subpoena of AP records. But then again, Holder's the one who didn't know anything about Fast & Furious either.

And of course Hillary didn't know anything about the requests for help in Benghazi. And Joe Biden, well he just doesn't know anything about anything. So who's running the joint? I'm convinced my mom could do a better job.

EP. MIKE KELLY (R-PA): This has nothing to do with political parties. This has to do with highly targeted groups. This reconfirms everything the American public believes. This is a huge blow to the faith and trust that the American people have in their government. Is there any limit to the scope where you folks can go? Is there anything at all? Is there any way that we could ask you is there any question that you should have asked?

My goodness. How much money do you have in your wallet? Who do you get emails from? Whose sign do you put up in your front yard? This is a tax question? And you don't think that's intimidating? It's sure as hell intimidating. And I don't know that I got any answers from you today. And I don't know that -- what Mr. George said is great work -- but you know what? There's a heck of a lot more that has to come out in this. Any anybody that sat here today and listened to what you had to say, I am more concerned today than I was before, and the fact that you all can do just about anything you want to anybody?

You know, you can put anybody out of business that you want. Any time you want. I gotta tell you. You could talk about how you're a horribly run organization, if you're on the other side of the fence, you're not giving that excuse. And the IRS comes in, you're not allowed to be shoddy, you're not allowed to be run horribly, you're not allowed to make mistakes, you're not allowed to do one damn thing that doesn't come in compliance, and if you do, you're held responsible right then. I just think the American people have seen what's going on right now in their government. This is absolutely an overreach and this is an outrage for all Americans.

Many were shocked to learn that IRS agents actually targeted conservative advocacy groups for heightened scrutiny when making decisions concerning their tax exempt status. I don't know why so many people were shocked. This is what university administrators have been doing for nearly twenty years. I've been writing about it for over ten years because I know that what you see on the campus today is what you will see in the broader culture tomorrow.

It all began in my home state back in 1995. That was when a gay activist and UNC administrator named Jonathan Curtis targeted the Muslim Student Association (MSA) for de-recognition. He didn't like the MSA position on homosexuality so he decided to yank their status as an official student group.

According to Curtis' demands, the only way the MSA could remain an official group at UNC would be to change their constitution to be more "inclusive." This de-recognition would have meant that the MSA would receive no university funding even though their members paid mandatory student activity fees. Thankfully, a UNC attorney stopped Curtis from acting on his threats.

When UNC got a new university attorney in 2002, Curtis decided to subject a number of Christian organizations to heightened scrutiny. I have in my possession every single email Curtis sent to the organizations he targeted. It is a stunning display of intolerance in the name of diversity and inclusion. In one email, Curtis told a campus Christian organization they would be derecognized if they did not remove statements from their constitution asserting a "belief in God."

Fortunately, I later found a Christian organization willing to sue. After years of fighting both in and out of court, the practice of interfering with the belief requirements of Christian organizations has ended at UNC Chapel Hill. But for years the cancer spread throughout the broader UNC system.

In 2003, UNC-Wilmington tried to derecognize the College Republicans for refusing to allow Democrats to lead their organization. We fought that battle and won. But as late as 2012, UNCW was still trying to deny official recognition to Christian organizations who wanted to be led by, of all people, Christians. It took a threat of litigation but I managed to get the university to change its policy. Now, UNCW Christian groups can control their membership and their message without government interference. But this basic freedom of association is still in jeopardy on some UNC campuses.

At their core, these assaults on freedom of association have always been assaults on freedom of speech. The campus administrators only target groups that are saying things with which the administration disagrees. The administration is trying to evangelize the student body and bring them into the church of multiculturalism. So they try to eliminate groups that promote any kind of absolute truth or core conservative values.

The IRS has now been caught doing a very similar thing. Their organization collects taxes. They have an interest in big government. So they are naturally hostile toward groups seeking a reduction in the size of government. The source of their motivation is obvious. But where do they get the hubris to act upon the desire to abuse their power?

The answer is simple: they learned it in college.

Is it any wonder that government agents are now showing the same disdain for free speech and freedom of association that has been on display on our nation's campuses since the 1990s?

Things are going to get worse, not better. Just ask the students who are now appearing before rape tribunals on American campuses. They are routinely denied attorneys when they appear before the campus judiciary. They are routinely denied the standard of proof beyond a reasonable doubt. And now campuses are giving accusers the right to appeal rape acquittals until the judiciary reaches the "right" result.

Americans beware. The students running these rape tribunals are our future prosecutors and our future judges. And they won't just be coming for our taxes. They will be coming for our liberty as well.

Former acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller had originally said that a couple of lower level employees went “rogue” and “off the reservation” by targeting conservative organizations for extra scrutiny. With that in mind, there’s this from FOX19 in Cincinnati:

• One of FOX19′s two sources went on say that these four IRS workers claim “they simply did what their bosses ordered.” FOX19 reported on Tuesday that the report by the Office of Inspector General states that senior IRS officials knew agents were targeting Tea Party groups as early as 2011.
• In fact, according to that report, Lois Lerner, who heads the IRS division that oversees tax exempt organizations, was told on June 29, 2011 that groups with ‘Tea Party’, ‘Patriot’ or ’9/12 Project’ in their names were being flagged for additional, and often burdensome, scrutiny..
• While the IRS is pointing at ‘two rogue employees,’ the number of organizations that were singled out has swelled to nearly 500, according to Rep. Congressmen Darryl Issa and Ohio’s Jim Jordan..
