CPAC 2013 - Phyllis Schlafy

Conservative legend Phyllis Schlafly told the Conservative Political Action Conference that the Republican establishment had given America a series of losers as presidential candidates over the last two decades. Schlafly, who founded Eagle Forum and has been a leader of the Conservative Movement for more than four decades, said the establishment tries to enforce “certain criteria” on their candidates.

“First of all, they only want candidates who will vote the way they’re told to vote, and we like to have ones who will go down there and stir up a little trouble and make sure they vote no,” she said. “You know they’re blaming Ted Cruz for voting no on everything that’s come up. Well good for him!”

Schlafly challenged political consultants like Karl Rove, who founded the super PAC American Crossroads, over their losing record.

“Now one of their chief spokesman was Karl Rove, and he had almost $400 million to spend on the election last year, and he ran TV ads for 31 candidates and only elected seven of them. That’s a pretty bad record. If you had a football coach with that kind of score, I don’t think you’d keep him the next year,” she said.

Schlafly said the other mistake that the establishment made was focusing its spending on television ads while neglecting get-out-the-vote efforts.

“And the running of the TV ads is kind of profitable to those who pick the ads, but it isn’t doing the job. There are a lot of people who don’t even watch TV anymore,” she said.

“Why is it that the establishment has given us this bunch of losers?” Schlafly said. “The establishment has given us a whole series of losers: Bob Dole and John McCain and Mitt Romney.

"And even when they picked a winner--George W. Bush--they picked somebody who spent more than the Democrats,” she said.

"After three long days the moment has finally arrived. They’ve saved the best for last. Me.

Now, since those disastrous elections in November there’s been a whole lot of gnashing of teeth, beating of breasts, whipping of backs and all sorts of other rather silly machinations as one so-called expert after another tells us how we need to re-think our movement.

No we don’t. We need to stop listening to the advice coming from the professional politicians and consultants most responsible for those political train wrecks.

If you need someone to pilot your ship, you don’t hire the captain of the Titanic.

So what do we do? The answer is so simple, really.

If the Republican Party wants to arrest its slow, steady slide into the abyss of political oblivion, it can do so by once more embracing its conservative foundations.

A couple of months ago I was on NPR discussing this topic with NPR’s token conservative, David Brooks. Inevitably the name Ronald Reagan arose, to which he said with exasperation, “WHEN are you people going to get over Ronald Reagan? He was THIRTY YEARS ago!”

To which I replied that 30 years ago was about the last time we had a conservative in the White House. Get over Ronald Reagan? Let me suggest that we need to get over faux conservatives like NPR’s David Brooks."

CPAC 2013 - Eric Cantor

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) spoke at the Conservative Political Action Conference Friday (3/15/2013).

Cantor struck a somber tone and used anecdotal stories of inner-city children in a narrow speech arguing for school choice. "School choice is the answer," Cantor said.

His speech was not particularly partisan, although at one point he urged President Barack Obama and Democrats "to see the light."

Cantor went on to invoke an adage from former President Ronald Reagan: "If we can't make them see the light, we'll make them feel the heat," Cantor said. The House Republican leader closed his remarks with a plea for Republican solidarity.

"Conservative ideas win," he said.

Paul Begala and Tucker Carlson returned to the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) stage for the ever-popular “Fight Club 2013: A Liberal & A Conservative Duke it Out,” moderated by Colin Hanna, President of Let Freedom Ring.

Outspoken critic of ObamaCare, Dr. Ben Carson, addressed the Conservative Political Action Conference this morning, detailing why he felt he had to speak out against the new health care law.

"Health care is one-sixth of our economy. If the government can control that, they can control just about everything. We need to understand what is going on, because there are much more economic models that can be used to give us good health care than what we have now. And we were asleep at the wheel to let it happen, but we have to find a way still to make it work," said the neurosurgeon, who drew applause by saying "economics is not brain surgery."

CPAC 2013 - Senator Ted Cruz

Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas closed out the annual Conservative Political Action Conference by calling on the thousands of people in attendance to join him in standing up for the U.S. Constitution.

Mr. Cruz also poked fun at Sen. John McCain of Arizona, who labeled him and Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky as “wacko birds” because of the outspoken brand of politics they’ve brought to Capitol Hill.

“I have to admit when Rand and I first heard that we thought it was a new kind of drone, ” Mr. Cruz said. “But if standing for liberty and standing for the Constitution and standing for liberty makes me a wacko bird, then count me a proud wacko bird.”

Mr. Cruz’s closing remarks — in particular his jab at Mr. McCain, the 2008 GOP presidential nominee — marked a fitting end to the three-day conference, which was billed as “America’s Future: The Next Generation of Conservatives — New Challenges, Timeless Principles.”

House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI), vice-presidential candidate on the 2012 Republican ticket, understandably made budget proposals the focus of his speech at the 2013 Conservative Political Action Conference.

CPAC 2013 - Governor Scott Walker

He was the surprise speaker of this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference. Who knew Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker would turn out to electrify — from the beginning to the end of his no-notes, no-teleprompter speech — more than 3,500 conservative activists in the ballroom of the Gaylord Hotel at National Harbor.

“Low expectations when he began his speech and what he did with his message about what he as governor did to empower people. He was the populist backed up with constitutional principles,” said Solomon Yue, Oregon Republican National Committee member.

He was the only speaker here to echo President Ronald Reagan, saying of his public employees reform: “I have done it to empower the people, not the government.”

Mr. Yue declared Mr. Walker “the best speaker so far” at this three-day CPAC.

CPAC 2013 _ Tea Party - Jenny Beth Martin

Tea Party Patriots co-founder Jenny Beth Martin addressed the 2013 Conservative Political Action Conference on Saturday, speaking on the "vision" the Tea Party has for America.

"For this vision, we've been mocked, marginalized and maligned by President Obama" and other Democrats, Martin said.

Martin also mentioned members of the "Republican establishment" like Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) who have mocked the Tea Party. But she offered praised for several Republicans, including Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.

CPAC 2013 - Senator Kelly Ayotte

In her CPAC speech Friday morning, Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) said that Obamacare is one of the "things that keep me up at night."

"Let me tell you about some of the things that keep me up at night," Ayotte said. "Too many Americans are out of work. Federal regulations are strangling businesses. Obamacare is increasing healthcare costs and stopping so many of those businesses from hiring."

She also took shots at Senate Democrats and President Barack Obama over taxes.

"We have a broken tax code, and the president and Senate Democrats, they just want to keep increasing taxes, making it harder and harder for our small businesses to hire and grow and put people to work in this country," Ayotte said.

Steve King discussed his steadfast anti-abortion stance -- casting himself as standing against not just liberal Democrats, but also the "rebranding" effort taking place in the GOP and "political expedience." Where former Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels once famously called for a "social truce" -- in which conservatives table social issues to discuss fiscal matters -- King reminded the crowd that he's been winning elections while never quieting on social issues. "Some want to rebrand the GOP," King said, "but they will never rebrand conservatives."

Wayne LaPierre addresses the crowd at the 2013 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington, D.C. He notes that no other organization in the world has spent more money to keep Americans safe. Texas Senator Ted Cruz, who is CPAC’s keynote speaker, helped introduce Palin and reminded the crowd and the media about her support for Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, Nikki Haley and himself when they were only candidates.

“I would not be in the United States Senate if it wasn’t for Sarah Palin,” Cruz said. Former Alaska Governor and Vice Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin repeatedly brought a jam packed crowd to its feet during her speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference Saturday.

Palin covered everything from overpaid Washington D.C. consultants, gun control and crony capitalism to New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s recently shot down big gulp ban.
